The organic cotton used throughout our sneakers is grown with the intention of minimising the impact of its creation on both farmer and environment. Organic cotton is cultivated without insecticides, pesticides, synthetic fertilisers, or GMO seeds.
Natural Latex Rubber
All our outsoles and foxing sidewalls are made from natural latex rubber from the hevea brasiliensis tree, vulcanised in a pressurised kiln at 120º to fuse the sole to the upper.
Flexible yet durable, natural rubber is a naturally sustainable product that's ultimately biodegradable at the end of its life.
Natural cork is the bark taken from the quercus suber, more commonly named the cork oak. Sustainably harvested with no damage to the tree it grows upon, natural cork is inherently anti-microbial (hypoallergenic & resistant to bacteria) and hydrophobic (repels water) making it the perfect material to stand between your feet and the ground.
Our insole foam is made from an environmentally friendly formulation containing both a renewable sourced castor bean oil in place of the traditional petroleum derived foam, and incorporates a percentage of recycled rubber.
Our shoe boxes and courier bags are made from 100% post consumer paper waste and printed from plant based inks.

From the outset we've been driven by a belief that simple, naturally derived products should be available at democratic, rather than exclusive prices.
By eschewing the traditional retail pricing model and partnering directly with our factory, we're able to reduce overinflated margins, reducing the total cost to our customers.
We work directly with our production partner in Dongguan, China, visiting quarterly to work alongside them sourcing, developing, testing and fine tuning each product we release.
Run by a mixed team comprising New Zealanders, British and Chinese, the best of both Western and Eastern values are present in the workplace culture.
Most importantly, a commitment to ethical manufacturing is reflected throughout the workplace. All workers are payed a living wage, and are provided multiple benefits including health insurance, a pension, on-site accomodation, and access to English lessons.
In an effort to reduce the long term impact of the products we create, we go to great lengths to limit our use of synthetic materials to the bare minimum.
The uppers of these sneakers are made from a beautifully textured organic hemp canvas, while the sidewall foxing and outsole are natural rubber latex from the Hevea Brasiliensis, tapped and collected by hand.
For cushioning we use Ortholite Eco® insoles derived from renewable castor oil rather than petroleum based, covered with a naturally sustainable cork veneer that helps wick moisture away from the feet.
Lovely quality shoes. The laces are really weak though, I busted the first one on my second wear, the other lasted about five more wears (that's why I gave three stars). Don't let that put you off too much from the shoes themselves as they are great quality.
Hey Cam, thanks for the honest review here! Definitely fair to say we've had some lace issues over the past year but we think we've sorted it on all new pairs. I'll get some replacement laces on their way to you today! Cheers, Oscar from Collective Canvas ✌️
I LOVE my new Baan Navys! They look fabulous and feel great on - I took them on holiday to Wellington - first time wearing them and over 20,000 steps on New Years Eve and feet still super comfortable! The sustainability aspects are amazing (which was my main reason for buying) and these will be my new go to shoe - don't need anything else!
